Abdominal Ultrasound

Anatomy_Abdomen_Tiesworks.jpg
Blausen_0592_KidneyAnatomy_01.png

An abdominal ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure used to assess the organs and structures within the abdomen. This includes the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile ducts, spleen, and abdominal aorta. Ultrasound technology allows quick visualization of the abdominal organs and structures from outside
the body. Ultrasound may also be used to assess blood flow to abdominal organs.

Ultrasound may be safely used during pregnancy or in the presence of allergies to contrast dye, because no radiation or contrast dyes are used.

Why might I need an abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound may be used to assess the size and location of abdominal organs and structures. It can also be used to check the abdomen for conditions such as:

● Cysts
● Tumors
● Collection of pus (abscesses)
● Obstructions
● Fluid collection
● Blockages (clots) in blood vessels
● Infection

The size of the abdominal aorta can be measured by ultrasound in order to detect an aortic aneurysm. Stones in the gallbladder, kidneys, and ureters may be detected by ultrasound. Abdominal ultrasound may also be used to assess the blood flow of various structures within the abdomen.

How to prepare for an abdominal ultrasound?

For an A.M. appointment, have a fat free dinner the evening before. Don't eat or drink from midnight until after the examination. For a P.M. appointment, clear liquid breakfast (no milk) before 9 A.M. Nothing to eat or drink after breakfast.

When will you get your abdominal ultrasound results back?

After an ultrasound scan, the radiologist will review your results and send them to your doctor extremely quickly. Before you leave the center after your appointment, you can set up a follow-up appointment with the radiologist during which they will discuss your results with you.

The follow-up appointment can occur once 12 hours have passed after the scan. Urgent Diagnostic Imaging Center has some of the fastest turnaround rates in the industry, allowing your doctor to receive your results and prescribe treatment for any urgent medical concerns as quickly as possible.

Renal Ultrasound

A kidney ultrasound may be used to assess the size, location, and shape of the kidneys and related structures, such as the ureters and bladder. Ultrasound can detect cysts, tumors, abscesses, obstructions, fluid collection, and infection within or around the kidneys. Calculi (stones) of the kidneys and ureters may also be detected by ultrasound.

A kidney ultrasound may be performed to assist in placement of needles used to biopsy (obtain a tissue sample) the kidneys, to drain fluid from a cyst or abscess, or to place a drainage tube. This procedure may also be used to determine blood flow to the kidneys through the renal arteries and veins.

Kidney ultrasound may be used after a kidney transplant to evaluate the transplanted kidney.

How to Prepare for a Kidney Ultrasound

Drink a minimum of 24 ounces of clear fluid at least one hour before your appointment. Do not empty your bladder prior to the procedure. Generally, no prior preparation—such as fasting or sedation—is required.

Your physician will explain the procedure to you and offer you the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have about the procedure.

You may be asked to sign a consent form that gives your permission to do the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if something is not clear.

When Will You Get Your Kidney Ultrasound Results?

Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic exam that produces images that are used to assess organs and structures within the female pelvis. A pelvic ultrasound allows quick visualization of the female pelvic organs and structures including the uterus, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Pelvic ultrasound may be performed using one or both of 2 methods:

● Transabdominal (through the abdomen). A transducer is placed on the abdomen using the conductive gel
● Transvaginal (through the vagina). A long, thin transducer is covered with the conducting gel and a plastic/latex sheath and is inserted into the vagina

The type of ultrasound procedure performed depends on the reason for the ultrasound. Only one method may be used, or both methods may be needed to provide the information needed for diagnosis or treatment.

Other related procedures that may be used to evaluate problems of the pelvis include hysteroscopy, colposcopy, and laparoscopy.

Ultrasound assessment of the pelvis may include, but is not limited to, the following:

● Size, shape, and position of the uterus and ovaries
● Thickness, echogenicity (darkness or lightness of the image related to the density of the tissue), and presence of fluids or masses in the endometrium, myometrium (uterine muscle tissue), fallopian tubes, or in or near the bladder
● Length and thickness of the cervix
● Changes in bladder shape
● Blood flow through pelvic organs

Pelvic ultrasound can provide much information about the size, location, and structure of pelvic masses, but cannot provide a definite diagnosis of cancer or specific disease. A pelvic ultrasound may be used to diagnose and assist in the treatment of the following conditions:

● Abnormalities in the anatomic structure of the uterus, including endometrial conditions
● Fibroid tumors (benign growths), masses, cysts, and other types of tumors within the pelvis
● Presence and position of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD)
● Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and other types of inflammation or infection
● Postmenopausal bleeding
● Monitoring of ovarian follicle size for infertility evaluation
● Aspiration of follicle fluid and eggs from ovaries for in vitro fertilization
● Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy occurring outside of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube)
● Monitoring fetal development during pregnancy
● Assessing certain fetal conditions

Ultrasound may also be used to assist with other procedures such as endometrial biopsy. Transvaginal ultrasound may be used with sonohysterography, a procedure in which the uterus is filled with fluid to distend it for better imaging.

How to Prepare for a Pelvic Ultrasound

A bladder ultrasound requires a full bladder. With that in mind, here are some steps to take in preparation for your bladder ultrasound:

● Empty your bladder two hours before the ultrasound.
● Drink one liter or 32 ounces of water one hour before your ultrasound appointment. Don’t empty your bladder again until the appointment ends.
● Wear comfortable clothing and take any prescribed medication as directed.
● Arrive at the ultrasound clinic 15 minutes before your appointment.

You can also eat as you usually would on the day of your ultrasound appointment.

When Will You Get Your Pelvic Ultrasound Results Back?

After an ultrasound scan, the radiologist will review your results and send them to your doctor extremely quickly. Before you leave the center after your appointment, you can set up a follow-up appointment with the radiologist during which they will discuss your results with you.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

Vaginal_Ultrasound.png

A transvaginal ultrasound is a relatively quick, painless imaging procedure that provides a more detailed view of your pelvic organs than a traditional abdominal ultrasound provides. These organs include your cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Your provider may order this imaging procedure to explore what’s causing your symptoms, diagnose a condition, monitor your pregnancy or plan for surgery.

Your provider may order a transvaginal ultrasound to diagnose conditions causing unpleasant symptoms, like pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding.

A transvaginal ultrasound allows your provider to identify:

● Cysts
● Tumors
● Fibroids
● Polyps
● Signs of a pelvic infection
● Signs of cancer
● Signs of ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage
● Potential causes of fertility issues
● If an intrauterine device (IUD) is in the correct position

Your provider may order a transvaginal during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester (weeks one to 12). Your provider may order a transvaginal ultrasound to:

● Confirm your pregnancy
● Determine how far along you are in your pregnancy
● Monitor your baby’s heartbeat
● Identify warning signs of a miscarriage or early delivery
● Identify conditions that will affect your pregnancy plan, like having a low-lying placenta (placenta previa)

A transvaginal ultrasound can also help your provider plan for surgery.

How to Prepare for a Transvaginal Ultrasound

Transvaginal ultrasounds don’t require much preparation. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, with little risk of side effects. You shouldn’t have to plan for someone to drive you home or to work afterward.

To prepare:
● Wear clothes that you can slip out of easily. You will have to remove your pants and underwear, and you may have to wear a gown.
● Remove your tampon before the procedure if you’re on your period.
● Follow your provider’s instructions about when to drink fluids and go to the bathroom. Having a full bladder affects the way your organs appear on an ultrasound. You may need to arrive at your appointment with a bladder that’s empty, full or partially full.

You do not need to shave for a transvaginal ultrasound.
Having pubic hair won’t prevent you from having an ultrasound. Groom to your comfort before the procedure.

When Will You Get Your Transvaginal Ultrasound Results Back?

After an ultrasound scan, the radiologist will review your results and send them to your doctor extremely quickly. Before you leave the center after your appointment, you can set up a follow-up appointment with the radiologist during which they will discuss your results with you.

Bladder Ultrasound

anatomy-of-the-urinary-bladder_edited_ed

A bladder ultrasound shows live pictures of your bladder, including your bladder wall and bladder pouches, also known as the diverticula. With such pictures, bladder ultrasounds can give doctors valuable information on variables like:

● Abnormalities with bladder size or thickness of bladder walls
● Bladder stones
● Cysts and tumors in the bladder
● Fluid collection
● How much urine the bladder can hold
● Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Bladder ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves delivered through a small, wand-shaped probe called a transducer. The transducer transmits the sound waves through the body and records the waves that echo back. The sound waves echo back once they hit a boundary between different tissues.

Such boundaries include those between fluid and soft tissue or soft tissue and bone. After recording the waves, the transducer sends the data to a nearby processing unit and monitor to display live pictures.

Prostate Ultrasound

A prostate/rectal ultrasound may be used to check the size, location, and shape of the prostate gland and nearby structures. It may be used to look at the prostate gland for signs of cancer or other conditions. It’s often the next step after a finding of raised (elevated) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) during a blood test. Prostate/rectal ultrasound may be used to stage and watch treatment of rectal cancer. It is also used to look at the rectum for other problems.

Your healthcare provider may also use a prostate/rectal ultrasound to help place a needle to take a tissue sample (biopsy). Or he or she may use it to help place radiation seeds used to treat prostate cancer.

Your provider may also use the test to see how well blood is flowing to the prostate or find masses.

Your provider may have other reasons to recommend a prostate/rectal ultrasound.

How to Prepare for a Prostate Ultrasound

You don’t need to do much to prepare for a prostate ultrasound. It’s an outpatient procedure that usually takes less than an hour. Your doctor may refer you to a hospital or clinic that has the proper ultrasound equipment for this test. You may also need to sign a consent form before the test.

Some possible instructions that your doctor might give you before the test include:

● Don’t eat for a few hours before the test.
● Take a laxative or enema to help clear out your intestines a few hours before the test.
● Stop taking any medications that can thin your blood, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin, about a week before the procedure. This is usually recommended if your doctor plans to take a biopsy of your prostate.
● Don’t wear any jewelry or tight clothes to the clinic on the day of the procedure.
● Take any medications recommended to help you relax during the procedure. Your doctor may recommend a sedative, such as lorazepam (Ativan).
● Make sure someone’s available to take you home in case your doctor gives you a sedative.

Scrotum

The scrotum or scrotal sac is an anatomical male reproductive structure located at the base of the penis that consists of a suspended dual-chambered sac of skin and smooth muscle. It is present in most terrestrial male mammals. The scrotum contains the external spermatic fascia, testes, epididymis, and ductus deferens. It is a distention of the perineum and carries some abdominal tissues into its cavity including the testicular artery, testicular vein, and pampiniform plexus. The perineal raphe is a small, vertical, slightly raised ridge of scrotal skin under which is found the scrotal septum. It appears as a thin longitudinal line that runs front to back over the entire scrotum. In humans and some other mammals the scrotum becomes covered with pubic hair at puberty. The scrotum will usually tighten during penile erection and when exposed to cold temperatures. One testis is typically lower than the other to avoid compression in the event of an impact.

A thyroid ultrasound is an imaging method to see the thyroid, a gland in the neck that regulates metabolism (the many processes that control the rate of activity in cells and tissues). A thyroid ultrasound is used to examine the thyroid for abnormalities, including cysts, nodules, and tumors.

A thyroid ultrasound may be ordered if a thyroid function test is abnormal or if your doctor feels a growth on your thyroid while examining your neck. An ultrasound can also check an underactive or overactive thyroid gland. Your doctor may also order an ultrasound if they notice any abnormal swelling, pain, or infections so that they can uncover any underlying conditions that might be causing these symptoms.

Ultrasounds may also be used if your doctor needs to take a biopsy of your thyroid or surrounding tissues to test for any existing conditions.

How to Prepare for a Thyroid Ultrasound

Wear comfortable clothing that exposes your neck, to allow the ultrasound technician or physician to easily examine the neck. Examples of clothing that might make the ultrasound examination difficult include collared shirts, turtlenecks, etc.

You do not need to make any special diet or medication changes for this exam.

When Will You Get Your Thyroid Ultrasound Results Back?

After an ultrasound scan, the radiologist will review your results and send them to your doctor extremely quickly. Before you leave the center after your appointment, you can set up a follow-up appointment with the radiologist during which they will discuss your results with you.

Breast

The breast is one of two prominences located on the upper ventral region of a primate's torso. Both females and males develop breasts from the same embryological tissues.

In females, it serves as the mammary gland, which produces and secretes milk to feed infants. Subcutaneous fat covers and envelops a network of ducts that converge on the nipple, and these tissues give the breast its size and shape. At the ends of the ducts are lobules, or clusters of alveoli, where milk is produced and stored in response to hormonal signals. During pregnancy, the breast responds to a complex interaction of hormones, including estrogens, progesterone, and prolactin, that mediate the completion of its development, namely lobuloalveolar maturation, in preparation of lactation and breastfeeding.

Obstetric

142107.gif

Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.

Postgraduate training programs for both fields are usually combined, preparing the practising obstetrician-gynecologist to be adept both at the care of female reproductive organs' health and at the management of pregnancy, although many doctors go on to develop subspecialty interests in one field or the other.

Soft tissue

Soft tissue is all the tissue in the body that is not hardened by the processes of ossification or calcification such as bones and teeth. Soft tissue connects, surrounds or supports internal organs and bones, and includes muscle, tendons, ligaments, fat, fibrous tissue, lymph and blood vessels, fasciae, and synovial membranes.

It is sometimes defined by what it is not – such as "nonepithelial, extraskeletal mesenchyme exclusive of the reticuloendothelial system and glia".
